A Chinese research team examining sediment samples from the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, a 6,000-meter-deep Pacific region containing vast deposits of nickel, cobalt, and manganese, has identified 11,742 viruses, of which 11,662 were previously unknown. Only about 4% of the viral protein clusters matched any previously recorded data, suggesting the zone hosts entirely unique viral lineages evolved to survive in an environment rich in heavy metals but extremely low in nutrients. The vast majority belong to the Caudoviricetes class, tail-structured viruses that inject genetic material into bacteria and are not dangerous to humans. Researchers warn that deep-sea mining could disrupt the viral ecosystem before it is fully understood, as these viruses play key roles in breaking down organic matter and cycling nutrients on the seabed. The research is published in Nature Communications.
