If you’re wondering why this story hasn’t gotten much attention it is because of amnesty laws granted by the church after Franco’s death to cover up Catholic kidnapping crimes, which accounted for at least 15% of the total adoptions that took place in Spain between 1960 and 1989. The scandal is closely linked to the Catholic Church, which under Franco assumed a prominent role in Spain's social services including hospitals, schools and children's homes. Nuns and priests compiled waiting lists of would-be adoptive parents, while doctors were said to have lied to mothers about the fate of their children. How did this scandal come to light? The truth emerged after two Spanish men, Antonio Barroso and Juan Luis Moreno, discovered they had been stolen as babies. The story emerged in and around 2011. Mr Moreno’s ‘father’ confessed on his deathbed to having bought him as a baby from a priest in Zaragoza in northern Spain. He told his son he had been accompanied on the trip by Mr Barroso’s parents, who bought Antonio at the same time for 200,000 pesetas – a huge sum at the time, the same as the price of an apartment. What was the church’s M.O. ? In summary the network of kidnappers lied to new parents about their babies dying, such as by claiming they was stillbirth, they then supposedly burrowed the babies in a mass burial, forged death certificates, bribed cemetery employees, and then sold the babies to wealthy parents unable to conceive. What is the evidence of these trafficking crimes? Dr. Eduardo vela worked at San Ramon clinic in Madrid where he told parents their babies had died during child birth Instead he sold the babies to wealthy couple for up to 20,000 who couldn’t have babies Dr. Vela was the first person tried in Spain for the Franco-era "stolen babies" scandal, where newborns were taken from their biological mothers and illegally given to other families. A Madrid court found him guilty of abducting Inés Madrigal in 1969, falsifying official documents, and certifying a non-existent birth, but he was acquitted because the statute of limitations had expired. Who as the first Catholic trafficker indicted on baby trafficking crimes? Sister Maria Gomez Valbuena who ran the “Sisters of Charity order” in fact ran a baby trafficking operation, was the first person indicted in the investigation into over 100 cases of infants taken from hospitals between the 1950s and 1980s, faced charges of illegal detention and falsifying documents Sister Maria’s name appeared in hundreds of complaints; lawyers represented families claiming she handled up to 3,000 adoptions per year between 1967 and 1983, often involving mothers who were young, poor, or unmarried. One victim, María Luisa Torres, alleged her newborn was stolen at the Santa Cristina maternity clinic in Madrid. Sister Maria died in January 2013 before her trial could proceed. The secret archives of the episcopal archives reveal that Antonio Maria Rouco Varela, the main cardinal of Spain, knew about the operation since 1985 and did nothing. Also, in 2026 investigation into the Spanish Catholic Church's cover-up of child sexual abuse by clerics. In that separate scandal, Rouco Varela (former Archbishop of Madrid and President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference) is among seven cardinalsand 61 bishops accused of covering up abuse cases, protecting perpetrators, or silencing victims for decades.
