Grace Hopper was a US Navy rear admiral, mathematician, and the person who built the first compiler. In 1952, she wrote A-0 – a program that translated mathematical notation into machine code. Before the compiler, every program was written in machine language. Binary instructions. Ones and zeros. Different for every machine architecture. Hopper's idea: write code in something closer to English. Let a program translate it into machine language automatically. Her supervisors told her it was impossible. Computers, they said, could only do arithmetic – not symbol manipulation. She did it anyway. Her compiler worked. Nobody used it. "I had a running compiler," she later said, "and nobody would touch it. They told me computers could only do arithmetic." She spent three years convincing people it was real before it was adopted. By 1959, she co-developed COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language) which ran the financial systems of the Western world for decades. COBOL still processes an estimated $3 trillion in daily financial transactions. The code that keeps the global economy moving was designed by a woman whose supervisors told her it was impossible. She kept a clock on her wall that ran counter-clockwise. When asked why, she said: "Why not? Who says a clock has to run this way?"

Covariant derivative ✍️ It is a tool that addresses a challenging issue in curved geometry. On a flat surface, if you carry an arrow pointing north while walking in a straight line, it continues to point north effortlessly. However, on a curved surface, the ground is twisting and tilting beneath you as you move. This makes the usual way of determining how a vector changes confusing. You mix together the true change in the vector and a false apparent change that comes purely from the coordinate grid bending under you. The covariant derivative offers a corrected version that separates the real change from that illusion. In the diagram, two nearby points on a curved surface are labeled p and q and connected by a tiny step. At point p, there is an arrow representing some vector, such as velocity or direction. The simple way of measuring how that arrow changes as you move toward q gives one answer, shown as a dashed blue arrow. But this method is unreliable because it does not account for the curving of the coordinate grid. The corrected version, shown as a green arrow, fixes this issue by subtracting the false contribution caused by the curvature and reveals the true rate of change. The core idea in the picture is called parallel transport, represented by a dotted line connecting the two points. On a curved surface, an arrow at point p and an arrow at point q exist in two different tilted flat planes, so you cannot compare them directly as you would in flat space. Parallel transport is the careful process of moving the arrow from p to q while disturbing it as little as possible. You twist it only by the amount the curvature requires, so that when it arrives, it can be accurately compared to whatever arrow exists at q. Without this step, the concept of comparing vectors at different points in curved space would not make sense. The correction needed to adjust the naive derivative is called a Christoffel symbol. Despite its complicated name, it simply records how much the coordinate grid bends and twists at each point, similar to how a fishing net draped over a hill stretches and tilts near a bump but lies flat elsewhere. This correction is not random; it comes directly from something called the metric. The metric defines how distance and angle are measured at every point on the surface. Once you understand how to measure lengths and angles everywhere, the twisting of the coordinate grid is fully determined, and the correction term becomes a way to extract that information. This all matters a great deal because it serves as the fundamental mathematical language behind Einstein's theory of general relativity. In this theory, gravity is redefined not as an invisible force but as a natural consequence of curved spacetime itself. A planet orbiting a star or an apple falling from a tree is not being pulled by anything; it is simply following the straightest possible path through spacetime, which has been warped by mass and energy. That straightest path is exactly the type of parallel transport shown in this diagram, but it applies to the fabric of space and time rather than a simple curved sheet.
