Agree that the U.S. drone industry is "wide but not deep." Only three things will build the depth that actually matters. First, components, components, components. We need massive redundancy across every component type, built to standards we set and control – not whatever each platform maker happens to use. Without that shared base of motors, batteries, electronics, connectors, and related parts, every “American” drone remains a custom assembly. Second, inventory. Most drone components (everything short of the most complex sensors or compute) are well suited to deep storage. Depth means stockpiles, the same way we treat bullets and other expendables. Production capacity alone is not depth if the parts are not already on hand and ready. Third, rapid assembly when it counts. In a conflict we need low-overhead assembly shops that can receive those stored components, assemble airframes, bench-test, and ship at high throughput. That is not full manufacturing; it is mobilization of a prepared component base into finished systems at volume. Current efforts, including the Gauntlet competitions, remain organized around complete platforms. That produces more companies making similar systems and some compliance pressure on motors and batteries, but it does not create the standardized, stockpiled component base or the assembly throughput required for real surge. Until those three elements are in place, the industry stays wide and shallow. Stop being distracted by the next shiny capability, get serious about the boring stuff. To DIU and Project Agincourt, I ask what is being done specifically to drive component standardization, deep inventories, and rapid assembly capacity?

Mao’s Cultural Revolution was also a “student social movement.” Makes you wonder who the organizers are.

Ukraine is a continuous military learning cycle: Observe the battlefield. Identify a problem. Develop an adaptation. Employ it. Observe the enemy response. Adapt again. Technology accelerates the cycle. Organizations determine whether battlefield learning becomes combat power.

@KTB_500 @USArmyEURAF Been doing a lot of architectural research on this and how it actually has to work. There's a big piece missing. The good part is that it has been identified.

Interesting, not something that can be done under fire, but very cool that they gave it a try — harness, not a basket also.

Catastrophic failures — natural or otherwise — are rarely instantaneous. There are almost always signs if you’re paying attention to the right things. In this video (volume up), you can hear the failure in progress. It’s easy to recognize, back away, and pull out your phone. In other events, it’s not so easy. The signs are still there, even if you can’t put your finger on them. Often your best (and only) warning is that something feels different. Trust your instincts. The human brain is extremely good at pattern matching, but much worse at creating meaning from those patterns.
