Meta's Muse Spark Open and Reflection's Beam launched a day apart. Spark is the bigger U.S. open-weight flex, while Beam is the Apache 2.0 workhorse with 23B active and a token-efficiency pitch. The open stack in the US is moving again, but Muse is asking for your data to get it.
The industrial example they give is very nice. They considered sensors in an industrial plant, where there needs to be forecasting for future values, maintenance windows, scheduled loads and so on, improving forecasting efficiency. mistral.ai/news/timestral/
Mistral is giving us new stuff: Timestral, time-series model (4 sizes from 5M to 209M). Runs on CPU. The 209M is #1 zero-shot on GIFT-Eval, TIME, and fev-bench. 140ms for a day-ahead forecast on an 8-thread box. Gotta say, I'm glad I'm seeing some activity from Europe AI.
We're seeing more and more blocks preventing AI agents from doing things, from Amazon blocking agents entirely to search engines putting up captcha blocks to prevent agents from using the search. One thing is clear, the companies that do now shift to have an AI agent surface, will be left behind as more and more people start using agents to do more of their tasks. This is such a disruptive technology that many do now see the potential yet, are are trying to maintain the status-quo, to their detriment for sure. I understand that websites don't want AI agents running on their site instead of actual human, because of ads and the ad revenue that they might lose. At the same time, they should consider that while the number of people running AI agents now is small, this number will increase exponentially in the future without a doubt. In the 1980s very few people had a cell phone, but ask yourself how many people DON'T have a cellphone now. It's the same with agents and the companies that realize this quickly are the companies that are going to win.
